Photographing Moose in New Hampshire October 2020

Moose in New Hampshire

It was the last few hours of my last day on my annual foliage trip up far north in New Hampshire and Maine. A few days before, I had found a moose, but it was too distant for great close ups. I approached my final spot and said a silent, sincere, and audible prayer. No moose. I decided to hold on to hope and hung around. Fifteen minutes later, this young bull popped out!

It was the eleventh moose that I have found this year!! I ended up spending over an hour with this moose. He had antler stubs covered with fuzz so I assume he was young bull, just a few years old. Not the big rack of antlers I had hoped for this fall, but I was grateful for the long and beautiful moose encounter.

He got so comfortable with my presence he went about eating.

I had the luxury of lying down and trying some more creative shots with blurred foreground elements.

He spent most of his time eating but occasionally shook his head and body like a dog drying itself.

After an hour it was time to say goodbye. Thanks for the awesome memories moose!

Photo comment By Terry Dunlap: Great shots John. What size telephoto did you use.
Photo comment By John Welch: Hi Terry, I used a Tamron 150 -600 mm, mostly using the 600 focal length. I have been charged by moose hiking before so I have learned to take all the distance I can!
