3. Loon Chick Growth:
Return to: A Season with the Loons 2022 Original Project or A Season With the Loons 2022 and 2023 or Portfolio & Prints

A one-day old chick at a 3rd location I monitored gets a sunset ride. I decided not to return to this location either. The loons were comfortable with me, but I realized the location had motorboats and I would have risked pushing them out into the lane of travel to get photos, so I decided it wasn't ethical. As a result, most of my photos for this growth sequence are from 2 separate nesting pairs and chicks that were very tolerant at a safe location (that will remain secret!). I mention these tidbits in case someone reading this was also looking to photograph loons. Not all loons will be tolerant or comfortable, so take your cues from them. Also hang back and let the loon decide its comfort level with you in your kayak. Also remember loon harassment is an actual criminal offense (at least in New Hampshire). Not worth jail time!
