May: Black and White Warbler, Downeast Maine - 2023 Natural New England Calendar

May is an exciting time in nature in New England. Finally, after months of cold and gloomy stick season, life suddenly returns. May is peak warbler migration season and I love spending this month trying to photograph them as much as I can. They are tricky birds to photograph. The are small, often in the treetops, and rarely sit still for more than a second or two. The black and white warbler can be one of the easier species to photograph. It behaves like a creeper or nuthatch often, creeping down and up the trunks of trees. They come down to eye level more often than other warbler species. I am always looking for a good background and was happy when this black and white warbler flew into a stand of evergreens. I was happy with how this very green image captured the mood of May.
