February

Short-eared owl, New York State. Though most birds migrate south out of New England and the Northeastern United States in general, there are birds from higher up in Canada that actually migrate to the Northeast during winter. One of these birds is the Short-eared owl. This past February I had the opportunity to photograph this owl with an awesome background in great light on a field trip to New York. These owls come out around dusk and fly low in open fields like moths, erratically zipping up and down searching for rodents. What a thrill to see!
