There is more to this shot than you might think. This was shot on a 10-degree February morning with horrific windchills and intermittent flurries. The snow would stick to scattered pieces of frozen seaweed without melting. This shaded area of sand beach was catching reflected light off the surrounding cliffs at sunrise. One thing I loved about this photo is that if you look closely at the individual crystals of sand are really a diverse array of "microscopic granite boulders" that have all of the different kinds and colors of granite that are present in the park. In this way, the shot condenses some key elements of Acadia into one scene: unique geology and the action of the sea.
